I stupidly did neither while airbrushing with india ink back in college and the effects were both surprising and long lasting, as the aerosol particles got in and around everything. If you decide to use any of the black india inks in an airbrush, do yourself a favor and only spray in an outdoor area or within an enclosed and heavily vented hood. Calli Jet Black India is also very permanent and waterproof and can be used in fountain pens. When an India ink claims to be "non-clogging," it's not usually referring to fountain pens, but technical pens and airbrushes. It's extremely permanent, that's for sure. I think Speedball Super Black Waterproof India Ink has shellac. Shellac based inks are no goes for fountain pens. Many companies make several different versions of their India inks and, yes, some are not formulated with shellac, if the ink is designed to dry to a matte finish it probably has no shellac, as would many non-clogging formulations. Totally gummed up the feed, nib, sac and anything else it could get too and this lovely pen which I had inherited from an aunt went from being a fine writing and drawing implement to being a not very good paperweight. A the time-1980s-Pelikan were selling the Fount India and the Tusche A inks in nearly identical bottles and I made the mistake of hastily grabbing the Tusche A instead of the Fount when I needed a refill. I guess I have to test more than one ink and see how they react to sunlight.įount India is indeed NOT shellac based but Pelikan Tusche A 17 definitely is-I had a Sheaffer Snorkel, burgundy with a chrome cap, gold trims and 14K fine Triumph nib in which I had been using, quite safely, Fount India for sketching. Pelikan's fount India is not really India ink I don't think it contains shellac. I might make a DIY india ink and see how it goes! This might help anyone who faces the same problem. to test a "homemade" India ink of dry carbon pigment, 0.1% by weight mixed with normal saline solution was unsuccessful." India ink made by Koh-I-Noor (Bloomsburg, N.J.) is described as composed of carbon particles (approximately 7% by weight) with stabilizing diluents present in all commercial products, including ethylene glycol methyltert-butyl ether (Methyl Carbitol), phenol, ammonium hydroxide and shellac, and was diluted 1:100 with 0.9% normal saline solution and successfully tested by Salomon et al. The composition of India ink made by Pelikan (Hanover, Germany) is described as containing ethylene glycol, sodium tetraborate decahydrate, ammonia and gelatin, and when diluted in 1:10 dilution in sterile water, it caused an abscess. The composition of India ink made by Higgins (Faber-Castell, Lewisberg, Tenn.) is described as containing about 7% carbon pigment, 5% propylene glycol and smaller concentrations of shellac, ammonium hydroxide and surfactant and when the composition was diluted in equal parts (50:50) with bacteriostatic water, it caused an inflammatory response.
